This is my mermaid made in Rio de Janeiro, in Muai thay tattoo studio.
Since I was a kid, all my stuff was always full of sea things; I have always loved pirates, beaches, ships and, of course, mermaids. Somehow I always felt homesick from somewhere I didn’t know, and everytime I met the seaside, my heart was full of power again; like I was part of it.
I went through depression and eating disorders, feeling hopeless and alone, but last year, I joined an african religion, wich is very spiritual, called “candomblé” (common here in Brazil). In this religion, we have a big respect about nature, and we have lots of “gods” representing it. We believe people born influenced by certain of this gods/elements, calling them their fathers or mothers, and I came to discover that my mothers are mermaids- from the sea, and from the waterfalls (yemanja, oxum).
This tattoo represents my origins, my love for my religion, and remembers me that doesn’t matter how homesick, sad, or desperate I am, because I’ll always have somewhere to come back and feel near god (yes, we believe in god), and my own nature.
